Over the centuries Varaždin citizens
were diligently building their town, taking special care to make it more beautiful and pleasant.
That is how the idyllic central European town come to be a place were man and his work became
interlaced by making a harmony of history and contemporaneousness.
As you walk along the baroque core of the town, visit some of the numerous galleries, theatre
plays or concerts, you can feel the charm that the town hides in its soul and at the same time
offers to the visitors.
Varazdin makes part of the historical chain of central European towns but as one rare urban
pearl, the town of harmony and intimacy.
Its specific urban identity is shown not only by the existence of the old baroque architecture
but also by its pretty squares, streets and parks. Todays numerous cultural and historical
monuments speak about an eight century history when many of the famous artists and entrepreneurs
lived there, and the gentry of the Central Europe chose it as a tourist destination. It used
to be a capital of the Triune Croatia.
In its essence the town in its entirety is a museum but at the same time a modern centre
of Varazdin County, at the crossroads of roads from Europe heading to Zagreb and the Adriatic
coast, Varazdin attracts passengers as a destination that cannot be avoided. Every visitor
will have the opportunity to feel the spirit of the centuries long gone and the beauty of
living in it in our times.
Varazdin is one of the most important tourist
destinations of the entire Northern Croatia. The beauty of the nature, events organized all
through the year make it interesting to visit at any time. The historical part of the town
often compared to Vienna is extremely preserved. The old fortress, centre of the town, numerous
museums, galleries and Varazdin Cemetery, a protected horticulture monument, are the main
point for visitors to see.
The Town Museum is located in the Old town exhibiting a large number of exhibits on the
history of Varazdin and the surrounding area from prehistory to today.
A unique collection of tens of thousands of mounted bugs collected by the Honorable Franjo
Koscec, are located in the entomologic part of the Herzer palace.
Amongst the many cultural events, the Barouqe Evenings in Varazdin are of particular spirit,
one of the main musical events in Croatia. The International festival of wind instruments,
The Book Day, Spancir fest, etc. must also be seen.
One of the specifics of the town is the Varazdin Guard, the so called “purgari” who, dressed
in lovely blue grenadier uniforms participate in important celebrations, standing by the
Town Hall.
There are possibilities for different sports and recreation events, particularly within
the football ground of the football club “Varteks”. The River Drava and the Varazdin Lake
are the paradise for fishers. A variety of river fish can be found. Varazdin cousin is
well known and distinguished, “klipici” are the most spread and very simple specialty of
the town. “Hajdin kasa”, turkey with pasta (“mlinci”), “strukli” (pasta and cheese), “zlevka”,
the wine and “Knaput” beer can satisfy most demanding tastes.

The Town of Varazdin, a peaceful baroque centre of Croatia with a population of approximately 50.000 citizens, is becoming
an attractive destination for domestic and foreign visitors.
For the last five years, Varazdin was pronounced as one of the tidiest towns in the continental part of Croatia.
The most important monument in the town is The Old Town Fortress made in gothic–renaissance architecture.

Arboretum Opeka is one of the most valuable in Central Europe containing 14.000 plants
and 200 herb species from all over the world.
Lepoglava, the cot of Croatian culture, science, art and school system is located only 30 km from Varazdin.
The famous Croatian castle, Trakoscan, surrounded with Park Forest and lake, is situated only 40 km from Varazdin.
